Qist al-Hindi

Indian Costus Root Powder • Rooted in the Sunnah • 100% Pure Ground Root

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Use this Indian costus, for in it are seven cures.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 5692–5693

A Root with a Direct Connection to the Sunnah

Qist al-Hindi — القسط الهندي — also known as Indian costus, holds a distinctive place in the Islamic tradition because the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ specifically instructed its use.

In the narration of Umm Qays رضي الله عنها, Qist is described as containing seven healing uses, with applications involving ailments of the throat and pleurisy specifically mentioned.

The narration does not identify all seven for us, and we prefer not to turn later traditional interpretations into Prophetic claims.

What we do know is meaningful on its own: Qist is one of the botanicals explicitly spoken about by the Prophet ﷺ and has remained part of Muslim wellness traditions for generations.

What Exactly Is Qist al-Hindi?

Qist al-Hindi is a dried aromatic root traditionally known as Indian costus.

It has a naturally earthy, aromatic, and distinctly bitter flavor and has been used across Arab, South Asian, and traditional Muslim wellness practices.

Sunnah Garden Qist is finely ground into a convenient powder so it can easily be combined with honey or incorporated into your personal wellness routine.

Why People Keep Qist al-Hindi

Qist is one of those traditional ingredients with a particularly memorable history. Its strong character, simple preparation, and direct mention in the Sunnah have helped preserve its place in Muslim households for centuries.

  • Specifically mentioned and recommended in authentic hadith
  • Described as containing seven healing uses
  • Used for generations in traditional Muslim wellness
  • Easy to mix with honey
  • Simple to incorporate into a personal wellness routine
  • Traditionally associated with women’s and general wellness practices
  • Suitable for faith-centered wellness routines
  • One pure botanical with no unnecessary additions

Our Favorite Way to Take It

Qist has a strong, earthy and naturally bitter taste, so one of our favorite ways to enjoy it is mixed into honey.

The honey softens Qist's intensity and brings together two ingredients with deep roots in Islamic wellness tradition.

Sunnah Garden Qist + Honey

Mix approximately ¼ teaspoon of Qist al-Hindi powder into a spoonful of Sidr honey or your favorite honey.

Stir until well combined and enjoy directly from the spoon.

If you are new to Qist, starting with a small amount allows you to become familiar with its naturally strong flavor.

Simple, traditional, and easy to make part of your routine.

Our ¼-teaspoon suggestion is Sunnah Garden's practical starting amount for the powder, not a standardized medical dosage.

Traditional Interest in Women’s & Hormonal Wellness

Qist al-Hindi has also been traditionally used in wellness practices involving women’s health, reproductive wellness, and thyroid-related concerns.

These traditional uses have begun to attract modern scientific interest, with researchers exploring Qist and its naturally occurring compounds in areas involving thyroid hormones, metabolism, and reproductive pathways.

Much of this research is still early and has been conducted in laboratory or animal models, so there is still much to learn about how these findings apply to people.

For Sunnah Garden, this is an interesting meeting point between traditional knowledge and emerging modern research—and another reason Qist continues to be explored as a broader wellness botanical.

Qist in Faith-Centered Wellness

Because Qist is directly mentioned in the Prophetic tradition, some Muslims also choose to include it within their broader ruqyah and faith-centered wellness routines.

One simple practice is to mix Qist with honey and recite Qur’an and du‘a over it before consuming.

Common ruqyah recitations may include Surah Al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas, along with authentic du‘as for healing and protection.

As with any permissible physical means, healing and benefit are sought from Allah while Qur’an, du‘a, dhikr, and tawakkul remain at the heart of ruqyah.

A Botanical Valued for Generations

Qist continued to be discussed and used in traditional Muslim, Arabian, and Unani medicine long after the Prophetic period.

Traditional preparations have varied widely, including powdered-root mixtures, honey preparations, and other forms of herbal use.

Rather than presenting every historical use as a modern medical claim, Sunnah Garden focuses on giving you the Islamic connection, traditional context, and practical ways people continue to use the ingredient today.

An Ancient Root Still Being Studied

Modern researchers continue to study naturally occurring compounds found in Indian costus root.

Experimental research has explored Qist and its plant compounds in areas involving antioxidant, inflammation-related, antimicrobial, metabolic, hormonal, and reproductive activity.

Much of this research remains preliminary, including laboratory and animal studies, so there is still much to learn about how traditional Qist preparations translate into modern clinical use.

For Sunnah Garden, that research is an interesting continuation of the story—not the beginning of it. Qist earned its place in our collection because of its remarkable connection to the Sunnah.

Ingredients

100% Indian Costus Root Powder (Qist al-Hindi)

No fillers. No artificial flavors. No artificial colors. No preservatives.

Why Quality Matters with Qist

With traditional roots and herbal powders, identity, purity, and sourcing matter.

Herbal ingredients can vary considerably depending on species, origin, processing, and storage. We believe traditional ingredients deserve the same care in sourcing that we give to the tradition behind them.

At Sunnah Garden, we seek simple ingredients from sources we trust and avoid unnecessary fillers or additives.

Pure Qist. Finely ground. Nothing unnecessary added.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight.

Keep the pouch tightly sealed and always use a clean, dry utensil when removing powder.

A Quick Care Note

Qist is a strong traditional botanical, so begin with a modest amount rather than assuming more is better.

If pregnant or breastfeeding, taking medication, managing a medical condition, or considering regular long-term internal use, consult a qualified healthcare professional before use.

If you are managing a thyroid, hormonal, fertility, or other medical condition, use Qist as part of a broader wellness approach rather than replacing prescribed care.

Those with known sensitivities to plants in the Asteraceae family should use additional caution.

We take the permissible means while remembering that all healing and benefit ultimately come from Allah.
